“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead
We invite you to volunteer with us! We welcome you with your skills, knowledge and fresh perspective. We believe, like you, that volunteering can be a journey of self-discovery and we want to be part of that journey.
SFLIG offers volunteer experiences in many different categories. These include teaching, medical, working with children and assisting in Creative Art centres. Any one of these categories provides the volunteer with countless opportunities to see first-hand the challenges that exist for the less privileged in Ghana and to, more importantly, have a positive impact on the lives of those they meet.
These four categories can be utilized in a variety of different settings. These include:
- Schools – from crèche/nursery to Senior High School
- Community Resource Centres
- Orphanages
- Rehabilitation Centres
- Community hospitals
- Community projects
- Community ICT Centres
- Farming plantations
- Environment
- Administrative work
- Media and Communication
- Creative Art Learning Centres
Your duties in these areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Support for learners to develop their skills and confidence in literacy and numeracy.
- Support for teachers to develop their lesson plans and learning activities.
- Use of your personal skills and talents to introduce topics such as life skills, games and songs, areas of expertise etc.
- Bath, clothe, feed and babysit.
- Help with homework.
- Teach literacy skills in placement community.
- Help in communal labour.
- Help in early mothers’ empowerment initiative.
- Implement ICT projects.
- Assist in community care centres.
- Facilitate girls’ clubs.
- Aid in vocational training.
- Administer medical treatment under the supervision of Ghanaian nurses and doctors.
Whilst skills in these areas are advantageous, they are not essential. However, we do believe it is essential that as a volunteer you are passionate, committed, enthusiastic, flexible, independent, resourceful, open-minded and willing to embrace the unknown with a smile.
We also believe that for a volunteer experience to be successful, the volunteer must immerse themselves in the culture of the community they are working in. As such, SFLIG places volunteers with carefully selected host families. You will sleep, eat, learn Twi (local dialect), attend social events e.g. weddings and funerals and be shown around the community with your host family. This allows for a cultural immersion experience with a Ghanaian family, making your stay with SFLIG one that is truly unique and memorable.
